Pippa Dore Hand-Tooled Leathercraft is a local business designing and creating beautiful hand crafted leather products. Her unique range includes notebooks, wallets, purses, key rings, belts and dog collars.
I first started working in leathercraft around thirty years ago when I learnt how to mend broken saddlery for the local riding schools. From here, I moved onto more decorative work and learnt how to tool patterns onto leather and make things like belts, dog collars and diaries.
I like to make the kind of things that I would like to own myself. I love designing my own patterns and carving them onto the leather, this makes each and every piece totally unique.
I also take in leather repairs of all types and last year I mended many things including a music bag, racing girths, bridles, headcollars and a lot of very ancient harness collars. It’s very satisfying to take something that is broken and make it useful again and leather is such a versatile material that just gets better with age.
My workshop is also the laundry room and the place where I store all my home made jams and cider! It’s a very cosy place to work with a cup of tea and the radio and my sheep outside the window. Over the years I have run classes on leather craft, teaching adults the various techniques to make their own notebooks, belts and wallets.
I absolutely love being a part of Achonry Farmers Market, for me it is the start of the weekend and I always go home with full bags and a happy mood. It’s such a friendly, relaxed and safe place for all ages. When we moved to Sligo in 2020, we knew nobody in this area and the market was a great place to meet people. I still can’t believe just how lucky we were to not just find a lovely home, but to find it in the nicest area I’ve ever visited with such a great community spirit. I feel very lucky.
